Drone Program
Drone Program at Derby District High School
At Derby District High School, we are proud to deliver one of the most exciting and forward-thinking programs available to secondary students in the region — our Drone Program. This course provides students with a rare opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications while still at school, setting them up for future employment or further education in the rapidly expanding drone and aviation sectors.
The program is designed to guide students through the process of obtaining their CASA Remote Pilot Licence (RePL), which is the official certification required to operate drones commercially in Australia. In addition, students complete their Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC), enabling them to legally communicate over aviation frequencies. These qualifications are essential for those wishing to operate Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in a professional setting and demonstrate the high level of skill and knowledge our students achieve.
Throughout the course, students develop both theoretical and practical expertise, learning about aviation terminology, airspace regulations, weather conditions, flight planning, risk management, and navigational charting. They gain real-world experience by planning and conducting drone missions, applying safety procedures, and operating in both standard and emergency scenarios. This hands-on training not only builds technical competence but also fosters confidence, problem-solving skills, and career readiness.
The success of the Drone Program is a testament to the dedication of our teachers and the strong engagement of our students. Our school community takes great pride in the fact that students are leaving the program with formal qualifications, valuable experience, and a clear pathway into future opportunities — whether that be further study, entry into the workforce, or ongoing involvement in aviation-related industries. Derby District High School is proud to be leading the way in preparing young people for modern careers using real skills that matter.

Pastoral Operations
The program is run by farrier and teacher, Paul Noble. He takes the students to the local rodeo grounds where the programme is run. They use three friendly horses to learn how to tack up, lead, and ride.
Mr Noble aims to teach students horsemanship skills that will prepare them for life in the pastoral industry.
