Primary Mathematics
Derby District High School provides a structured and supportive mathematics curriculum for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The school recognises that every student is at a different point in their learning journey.
Our Kindergarten program is underpinned by the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines and the Early Years Learning Framework. Learning experiences are age-appropriate, play-based, and hands-on, supporting students in developing early mathematical understanding through exploration and meaningful learning.
From Pre-primary to Year 6, mathematics learning is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum and delivered through PR1ME Mathematics. Carefully sequenced lessons, Daily Review, Bond Blocks, and other concrete materials support students in developing strong mathematical understanding, number sense, and confidence.
Across all year levels, teachers use the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach. Students first build understanding through hands-on experiences. They then move to visual representations and abstract mathematical symbols. This helps students build deep conceptual knowledge and confidence with new mathematical concepts.
Student progress is regularly monitored through classroom assessment and whole-school data sources. These include PAT Mathematics, NAPLAN and school-based assessments. The data identifies student needs, provides targeted support and informs teaching.
Our goal is to develop confident, capable mathematicians. We want students who can think critically, solve problems, and apply their mathematical knowledge and skills in real-world contexts. This enables them to experience success at school and beyond.
