Berry Street Education Model (BSEM)
At Derby District High School, we are embedding the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) as a whole-school framework to support student wellbeing, engagement, behaviour, and learning outcomes.
The Berry Street Education Model recognises that trauma, chronic stress, and disadvantage can significantly impact a young person’s behaviour, relationships, emotional regulation, and capacity to learn. Through this framework, DDHS aims to create safe, inclusive, calm, and supportive learning environments where all students can succeed.
By embedding Berry Street strategies across the school, we are strengthening positive relationships, student engagement, emotional regulation, and readiness for learning while building a consistent and supportive school culture.
Across all classrooms, students participate in:
-
Predictable routines and consistent expectations
-
Brain breaks and movement routines
-
Explicit teaching of emotional regulation strategies
-
Opportunities to build positive relationships with peers and staff
